Posted 1/23/23

Good evening Welby Way families,

I hope you are all having a wonderful sunny weekend with no rain and had the opportunity to enjoy some family time together outside.

This Week:

The district is acknowledging Kindness Week this week and next week our amazing POWW will be doing the same by providing our students with a "Kindness" assembly and rock painting activity .  In the meantime, as a school this upcoming week, we will be focusing on "Give one, Get one!"  The goal is to provide those on campus who we know and someone new with a compliment with the hopes to receive one.  Let's spread the positivity and kind words!!

Monday:  On Monday our 3rd - 5th grade spelling bee finalists will compete against each other in the auditorium.  This will be to determine our final candidate for the upcoming Scripts spelling bee.  More information to come regarding the Scripts spelling bee.

Tuesday:  On Tuesday, Ms. Mendez, our wonderful music teacher, will hold the final 4th and 5th grade choir auditions in the auditorium from 11:45 am - 12:15 pm.  Students will eat first and then come to the aud.  We had only a few students audition this week, so if your child is interested in auditioning please encourage them to participate on Tuesday.

Wednesday:  On Wednesday, Mrs. Hassig and Ms. Awad will be going on a field trip to Rancho Olivas.  I know they are going to have an amazing trip and create wonderful memories.  In the afternoon, we will have our monthly fire drill for all students and staff.  There will also be a GATE (gifted) Parent webinar from 5:00 - 6:00 pm that evening with Dr. Robert Cooper - Developing a Culture of Care.  The flyer will be sent out with more information on Monday to register.

POWW Restaurant Night at Shake Shack -  Save having to make dinner and do dishes because on Wednesday POWW is hosting restaurant night at Shake Shack on Topanga Cyn. Blvd.  The flyer with specific times and details will be sent out on Tuesday.

Thursday:  On Thursday Student Council is hosting our next spirit day with Crazy Hat Day.  I can't wait to see everyone come to school with a fun and crazy hat.  The class with the most participation will win a student council prize.   We will also have our next Honors Award Assembly in the morning.  Teachers will be notifying families if their child is receiving an award.  Students with 100% attendance will also be acknowledged at the assembly.  This applies to all students who have come to school each day on time with no tardies or leaving early. Our Board Member Mr. Scott Schmerlson will also be joining for a portion of the assemblies to congratulate our students.

SSC/Governance:  At 3:00 pm on Thursday will be our January SSC/Governance Meeting via zoom.  We will be discussing our Budget Needs Assessment for the 2023 - 24 school year and the fiscal needs of our school.   All are welcome to join on zoom at:

Friday:  On Friday, teachers will be sending home mid-year progress reports/warning notices.  If your child receives a warning notice, this is a perfect time to plan a family meeting to discuss any areas of need for your child and best next steps to support them.   Also if your child is struggling or in need of assistance with homework do not forget that paper.co is a 24 hour and 7 day a week live homework support for all students.  It is easy to register at paper.co and is an extremely helpful tool for any homework help your child may need.

Fall 2023 Are You Returning:   It is hard to believe that we are in the beginning phases of planning for the 2023 - 2024 school year.  With this it is helpful to know who is returning, who might be moving, and who will be enrolling a younger sibling.   Please take a moment to copy and paste the google link below and complete the brief survey as this information helps us know how many students to plan for in the fall.   Thank you for your time and input and to those who have already completed this.

Additional After School Program:  Welby Way has the opportunity to bring an additional after school child care program for all grades with the organization Keep Youth Doing Something (KYDS) to Welby.   They distributed flyers on Thursday after school and flyers are available in the office to register for the program.   This program will start on Monday, January 30th and is meant to lower the numbers in our YS program and for families whose children stay after school until at least 5:00 pm or later each day.  The district will be funding this program and is not meant for the children who stay after school for short periods of time or for just a couple days a week.

I hope you all have a positive remainder of the weekend.  Once again, I thank you all for your continued partnership as we work together to do what is best for our Welby Way students.   This is all for now.

Your Welby Way Principal,

Mrs. DaCorsi
