News for the Week of December 12-16
Posted 12/11/22

Good evening Welby Way families,

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend and staying dry as we prepare for our last week of school prior to the 3 week Winter Break.   Please note that there will be no school Dec. 19th - Jan. 6th, 2023 with school resuming on Monday, Jan. 9th.  There will be regular dismissal on Friday, Dec. 16th

COVID TESTING: Please note we are distributing rapid antigen tests to all students and staff on or before the last day of school prior to break with directions and timeline for testing. These tests have varying expiration dates, however, they are authorized for use beyond their expiration date by the California Department of Public Health. Please be sure to administer the antigen COVID test 24 to 48 hours prior to returning in January regardless of whether your child has symptoms or not.

**This week we had several students test positive for COVID and others sent home with flu symptoms. Though daily attendance is extremely important, if you child exhibits any flu like symptoms, has thrown up, or has a fever, please keep your child home until they are fever free or haven't thrown up for 24 hours or have met the return to school timeline for COVID. Thank you for your assistance and understanding with this.

Winter Sing Program:  This Thursday, December 15th at 8:30 am and 1:15 pm in the auditorium (please note the change to the afternoon program) will be our Winter Sing program for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade classes.  The students, teachers, and music teacher have been working hard and practicing in the last couples weeks so it is going to be a beautiful show.  Parents and family members will enter the auditorium through the back and do not need to sign in at the office.

Student Council Holiday Sweater:  On Thursday Student Council is hosting a spirit day where students can come to school in the best festive gear.  Be sure to dig out a fun holiday sweater, scarf, hat, and anything that is school appropriate and festive to ring in the holiday season.

THANK YOU:  Thank you to the amazing parents who organized, lead, and orchestrated an extremely successful Book Fair this week.  All of the volunteers time and efforts are greatly appreciated as I believe the sales hit a record high this school year.   It was wonderful to see so many parents and family members participate in the fun family events during the event too.

Also, thank you to the amazing Welby families who took the time to complete the School Experience Survey.  We had 100% staff participation, all but a few students completed it, and 91% of our families participated.  Tnank you for your time and input.  I knew Welby Way could do it and show the district we met or exceed the expectation.

Emergency Drills:  This week our school will be participating in a Fire Drill on Tuesday morning and a Shelter in Place drill on Thursday.

Practicing our emergency drills helps to best prepare our students and staff safe stay during an actual drill.

Friday 5th Grade Sweets and Treats:  On Friday the 5th grade will be selling Sweets and Treats after school in the front of the school for students.   All proceeds go to helping support the fun events planned for our 5th graders this school year.

Trespassers on Campus:  I am sad to say that our school and neighborhood has been experiencing some disrespectful trespassers in the evening and on the weekends.  They been disrespectfully skating on campus and ripping down posters or art around campus.  Some have even destroyed some of our neighbors holiday decorations.  If you happen to see anyone on campus during off school hours that should not be there, do not hesitate to call school police at 213-625-6631.  Hopefully with our extra eyes especially during the holidays we can prevent future incidents from occurring.

I hope you all have a wonderful remainder of the weekend, take a moment of family time together, and enjoy.  As always, thank you for your continued support.  This is all for now.
